TS/S STEFAN BATORY, Polish Ocean Liner 1968-1988

THE FAREWELL SONG/ POZEGNALNA PIOSENKA

By Polish country music group ZAYAZD, 1988
Wykonanie - zespol muzyki country ZAYAZD, 1988

"BATORY'S TIME", 1988

Lyrics & music: Lech Makowiecki, ZAYAZD
Arrange: Janusz Poplawski (Niebiesko Czarni)
Translation: Peter Grajda

When the time came to sail
Under our own white and red banner again,
She was carrying poor and rich
Across Atlantic again and again,
Later during WWII, in the fight for convoys
She was laughing in the face of German submarines, "Wolf Packs",
She survived bombs, mislead torpedoes, "Lucky Ship" she was called

Ref.
Hey... But, Batory's time has come to end like a dream
Hey, hey... today she said her goodbyes, it was her last voyage
Hey... Batory's time, the memory is covered with dust
Hey, hey... today she's leaving us; with no point of return,

Often time, the Biscay Bay collected its ransom,
The Beaufort's scale was lacking degrees,
The crew has never failed her,
She has never failed the crew
In every country, even in Bombay
She was welcomed by her Polish countrymen
They wanted just for a second to feel like they are back in Poland
Ref.
(...) Hey Batory's high life - legendary life!
Hey, hey... it's only the wind - not the tears, not the tears

"CZAS BATORYCH", 1988

Slowa i muzyka: Lech Makowiecki, ZAYAZD
Aranzacja: Janusz Poplawski (Niebiesko Czarni)

Gdy juz plywac mozna bylo
Pod bandera naszych stron,
Wozil statek biednych i bogatych
Przez Atlantyk wciaz,
A potem w bojach o konwoje
Wilczym stada smial sie w nos
Bomby przezyl, zmylil torpedy, "Lucky Ship" zwali go.

Ref.
Hej... Batorego czas minal jak zycie, jak sen
Hej, hej... dzis pozegnal nas,  to byl ostatni rejs
Hej... Batorego czas, pamiec pokrywa kurz,
Hej, hej... dzis opuszcza nas; stamtad nie wraca sie juz,

Biskaj nieraz haracz zbieral,
Braklo stopni w skali "B",
Lecz zaloga nigdy nie zawiodla
On nie zawiodl tez,
W kazdym kraju, nawet w Bombaju
Wital go rodakow tlum,

ZAYAZD (An Invasion) is the name of a popular Polish country music group... In 1986, Lech Makowiecki, as a former leader of another music group called BABSZTYL, once a very popular student band, chose the "ZAYAZD" as a name for his new music formation…In 1987-88, ZAYAZD performed onboard the STEFAN BATORY during her three cruises: Dakar, Norwegian Fjords and Caribbean as the very last one. During that last, Caribbean cruise Lech Makowiecki, wrote the above song "Batory's Time" ("Czas Batorych"). The song has became a very special farewell to the ship by her passengers, crew and ZAYAZD... Makowiecki recalls: "I remember tears in eyes of many people within the audience, while we were singing "Czas Batorych" during the last concert onboard STEFEK. Everybody knew, that it was the end of STEFEK'S maritime career and most likely she will be sent to the scrapyard…"

ZAYAZD to nazwa polskiego zespolu muzyki country.

..."All artists who were hired to perform during the couple of last STEFEK'S voyages, including ourselves were participated in the STEFAN BATORY SHOW every night.  Each show was dedicated to a different style of music and culture... there were American Day ("Country and Western"), Russian-Gipsy Day ("Romances"), Jewish Day ("Fiddler on the roof"), Operetta Day ("Kalman Invites"), Polish Day ("Folk dance and music") etc… For all of us who performed there, it was often a quite challenge and a lot of work to do the job right. However, I have never experienced such a great audience’s applause as the one onboard the STEFAN BATORY. Apart from that, it was always quite excitement and... fun when there was a storm, rough sea and we had to be on the stage giving a show - trying hard not to let ourselves fall down while the ship was rocking like crazy..." Lech Makowiecki

..."Artysci zaokretowani na ostatnie rejsy STEFKA, wlacznie z nami czyli ZAYAZD-em brali udzial w programie rozrywkowym pt. STEFAN BATORY SHOW. Lech Makowiecki
